Nutrigenomics: the future of health and skincare

A personalised nutrition and lifestyle programme is integral to successfully achieving your health and skin goals. Just like most of us have learnt to tweak and tailor our skincare regime to our skins unique needs, it makes sense that how we heal our skin internally is personalised too.

What is nutrigenomics?

Nutrigenomics is the science that explores how individual genetic differences play a role in the way an individual responds to diet and lifestyle behaviours.

For example, one of the genes I often look at for my acne clients is SRD5A2. This gene regulates the conversion of testosterone to the more potent form of testosterone 5α-DHT. Certain SNP’s on SRD5A2 means, under certain conditions, the enzyme works quickly or slowly, meaning higher levels of 5α-DHT contributing to acne.

How your genes interact with your diet is at the cutting edge of current nutrition research. No we can’t change our genes; but we can change the environment our genes are exposed to. This is what nutrigenomics is.

Despite recent advances in our understanding of nutrigenomics, the idea that a given food or lifestyle habit will have the same effect for all individuals, or that all individuals have the same need for given nutrients, is still widespread.

Research into nutrigenomics teaches us that each of us are unique and may not respond in the same way to a particular food plan or intervention….a bit like how the acne account you follow just needed to reduce her dairy intake to stop her breakouts whereas you’ve given up every fun food and still have acne! (FYI I don’t believe in having to give up ANY food to heal your acne and my programmes focus on building foods IN to your diet, versus eliminating ; ))

How I use nutrigenomics at True Skin Nutrition

You will commonly hear me say how I may start 5 different clients on their True Skin Transformation, but each programme will be different and nutrigenomics is integral to helping me personalised and guide a clients programme.

It doesn’t get more personalised than DNA and my DNA Packages are about as personalised as skincare gets!

In order to create the most relevant and personalised nutrition programme for my clients, I like to use all available data which includes nutrigenomics testing.

How can nutrigenomics help you find the root cause of your acne?

Let’s go back to the SRD5A2 gene. Now certain SNP’s on SRD5A2 mean that the enzyme works quickly or slowly. What difference does this make? We an upregulated (fast working) SRD5A2 means more 5α-DHT……which means more acne!

This is just one gene, the reports have numerous genes which impact hormonal balance, inflammation, detoxification and stress response….all pretty key stuff to healing acne naturally.

I just love, love, LOVE nutrigenomics! It is without doubt the future of healthcare, and it can be the future of your skincare too.

We have been able to achieve some amazing outcomes by leveraging this cutting-edge research to assess and treat clients to their individual needs, versus following generic acne advice and getting super dispirited when nothing works.

You can find out more about getting your DNA tested in my DNA Packages, or book your Clarity Call and we can chat it though.
